CHRISTIAN CHARACTER > CC 105 > LC: GROUP DISCUSSION 2
THE RENEWAL OF THE MIND IS CENTRAL TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF YOUR CHRISTIAN CHARACTER AS A BELIEVER.
Christian Character as we have been taught is the quality that sets you apart; the quality that distinguishes you. It is the quality that projects God or shows the character of God in you. The character of God is the benchmark. God himself imparted His character in us at the new birth. We cannot do much with it except we make conscious effort to develop this character that God has imparted in us. This character must be developed if not it will be like the farmer, who after putting all efforts into clearing the bush, stumped and planted, walks away without tending. In this case, God has completed His part and left it for us to tend (develop). We have to put in effort to develop the Christian Character that God has imparted. Renewal of the mind is the principal thing.
WHAT IS RENEWAL OF THE MIND?
Renewal of the mind means, replacing the old pattern with the new. That is the old way of thinking or doing things by the Word of God and as patterned in the Bible. Romans 12:2. The renewal of the mind is what motivates you to pattern your character, to conform with God’s character. As we know, our character can repel or attract.
FIVE WAYS RENEWAL OF THE MIND CAN HELP DEVELOP YOUR CHARACTER AS A CHRISTIAN.
There are several ways. For this writing, we are staying with five:
      a. Aligning with God and His Word is the first eye-opener. You study the Word and meditate on it. Joshua 1:8. There you begin to discover what God says about you because if you don’t know who you are and what God has said concerning you, you won’t know what to do as far as character development is concerned.
      b. As you stay or have intercourse with the Word, you will begin to receive instructions on how to go about certain things as a Christian. Your approach to things, the way you relate with people, authority, etc. If you were that Christian who releases words anyhow, all of those would stop.
      c. God has a purpose for us that we are designed to impact the world with that is unique to us alone. Renewal of the mind enables us to discover the purpose and focus on it.
      d. Renewal of the mind can help us cultivate healthy habits that can affect us and the people around us as well.
      e. Our thoughts have a major role to play in our character development. Our thought is a very good influencer either positively or negatively. Renewal of the mind can help us stay positive.
In summary, renewal of the mind is the key to Christian Character development. It can only be achieved by God’s grace.

REPLY to Christian Character Group Discussion 2 Assignment
Your opening sentences and introduction were very clear, good and commendable. The definition was apt and aligned correctly as expected. Meanwhile, it is very easy to approach the centrality of mind renewal from various angles; taking into account our primary knowledge, conditional requirement and purpose of God, in the life of a typical believer: focusing on character relevance and imperative development, in order to live and run a successful Christian race.
Having said that, it is equally necessary to point out few areas of concern. Your simplicity and style of treating five areas without in-depth touch, is worthy of mention. Further highlighting and detailed presentation could have helped to trigger more questions and learning. We think, this is the whole essence of the exercise. The entire exercise lacked title and subhead in order to guide reading and for easy comprehension. This puts everyone in jeopardy as where we are heading to and it ought not to be that way. Even if, we are writing out of point, there should be a definite direction and focus.
This work is good and deserve commendation; as the efforts alone is worth it. However, as students we are prone to errors and mistakes and even misapplication, which are unintended and should be understood in that context.
To be an effective and efficient believer, your character must be above board and must be better on a daily basis; otherwise you would not know when you enter the trap and snare of the devil. That is not our portion, one would say; only if we keep our eyes on the ball, without relenting through regular and continual renewal of mind to engender dynamic character development.

As a believer, I completely agree that our thoughts play a crucial role in shaping our character development. The Bible verse Philippians 4:8(NKJV) explains it perfectly, “Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.” Renewing our minds involves actively replacing negative or worldly thought patterns with godly perspectives. By meditating on the right things, we can transform our attitudes, responses, and ultimately our character. When we align our thoughts with biblical truths, we cultivate the seed of the gift of the spirit that has been imparted to us in the new birth. We begin to manifest Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Goodness, etc. as described in Galatians 5:22NKJV.

Renewing our minds is an ongoing process that plays a crucial role in shaping our character as Christians. As Colossians 3:16(NKJV) says, it transforms our thinking, influences our actions, and allows us to embody the virtues and qualities reflective of Christ’s teachings. Therefore, it’s essential that we ensure our thoughts are guided by the word of God to produce godly actions, shape our habits, and mold our character.

Webster’s English dictionary defines character as the attributes or features that make up and distinguish an individual. As Christians, our spirit man was recreated at the New Birth and God’s nature or character was imparted to us (2 Corinthians 5:17 and Galatians 5:22). The character of God is the basis, foundation, and benchmark for Christian character, and we should look to Christ Jesus, who is the exact representation of God (Hebrews 1:3 NKJV).

Man is made up of a spirit, soul (mind, will, and emotions), and body (1 Thessalonians 5:23 NKJV). It is the spirit component of man that is regenerated at the new birth, not the soul and the body. Our personality relates to the soul, and our mind is the dominant component of our soul. There is a constant war between our body and our spirit, and therefore we are to develop our character by renewing our minds. When we start living by the Word of God, our spirit controls our soul, and then, through our mind, controls our body (Romans 12:2 NKJV). We should bear in mind that God’s divine power has already given us the enablement we need to become like God. We play our part by developing our character to conform to that of Christ. We draw from the seed that has been imparted to our spirits by developing our minds with the Word of God (2 Peter 1:5-7 NKJV). For it is God who works in us both to will and to do for His good pleasure (Philippians 2:12-13 NKJV).

Here are five ways renewing your mind can help develop your character as a Christian:

      1. We are transformed daily to be like God. We become Kingdom-minded, start thinking in terms of the Kingdom of God, and can test and approve what God’s will is, His good, acceptable, and perfect will (Romans 12:2 NKJV). We are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord (2 Corinthians 3:18 NKJV).

      2. We become good witnesses for Christ (Matthew 5:13-16 and Philippians 2:14-16 NKJV). Our character is proof that we are Christians, and it’s a way we profess our faith. As we renew our minds with the Word of God, our good character shines brightly like a radiant light in the midst of deep darkness. That is why Jesus says we are the salt of the earth.

      3. It keeps us in the light (Ephesians 5:8-14NKJV). To walk in the light shows an action verb. When we walk in the light, we don’t have anything to do with the unfruitful work of darkness. It is a conscious decision as a believer to pull out the imparted seed deposited in our spirits by the new birth and have it developed and seen as we walk in the light.

      4. It keeps us constantly purified by the Word of God (Psalm 119:9-11 NKJV). With a constant intake of the Word of God, our lives are easy to see through. There is no hidden or secret thing about our lives. When the Word of God dwells in us richly, we are transparent, and we let the light of the Word of God shine through. We do this by taking heed to the Word of God, not wandering from it, and hiding it in our hearts.

      5. We are led by The Holy Spirit. As we renew our minds, we learn to understand the leading of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit leads us in the light (Ephesians 4:17-19 NKJV, 1 Corinthians 2:19 NKJV). The Spirit of God will show us what has been freely given to us. To walk in the light and exhibit the character of God is to walk by the Spirit.

This is such an excellent presentation and all your points actually highlight the grace and mercy of God towards us.
I think why people stumble sometimes in walking with the word or in the process of mind renewal is partly because they believe that it is in their strength and ability and so I like how you remind us that for it is God who works in us both to will and to do for His good pleasure (Philippians 2:12-13 NKJV).
God has called us and equipped us to do his work. He has also factored in our shortcomings and his plan is excellent. Trying to display Christian character without a knowledge of Christ, will only leave a believer frustrated and exhausted. It will be like running on a car with three wheels. Eventually the car will come to a halt and the problem will have to be addressed.
Another major highlight for me in your post, is the truth that renewal of the mind is a daily activity. It is not a one-off event or a status that is acquired by the click of a button. It requires intentionality and daily practice as we depend on the grace and spirit of God; knowing that even if we miss it on Monday, his grace is sufficient for us and his power is made perfect in our weakness (2 Cor 12) and so we can go again on Tuesday

I agree with your points where you say that a believer can develop his character by renewing his mind so that the enemy (Satan) does not gain access to his mind and begin to attack him against the right, he has as a believer.
Don’t make God’s word conform to your lifestyle, rather make your lifestyle conform to God’s word. “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.’’ Romans 12:2
          Now how we renew our minds is as follows;
          a) Daily Prayer
          b) Daily reading of the bible
          c) Daily meditating on the word of God. “This book of the law shall not depart out from your mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.’’ Joshua 1:8
          d) By choosing a godly character trait
          e) Church Attendance; “Not forsaken the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.’’ Hebrew 10:25
The renewal of mind in a believer’s character makes him kingdom-minded and constant renewing of mind until Jesus comes helps mature the believer’s character in running this race.

Christian Character Group Discussion 2 Assignment
Christian Character is the Christ-like character; which is the character of Christ of the believer. This means believing and acting like Christ in all circumstances of life. That is, the life of Christ in the believer. Character is the ability to stay with the boss regardless of the trying moment. Consistency in marriage, business, relationship, and even ability to forgive as commanded by the Master.
Therefore, the development of Christian character is the wholesome responsibility of each individual believer. However, parental training, guidance and influences as the first ‘God’ are also paramount especially at the moulding stage; moreso it is a Biblical requirement (Eph 6: 4; Prov 22:6). This epitomizes the importance of character in the race of the kingdom and the centrality of the renewal of mind for that purpose. Hence, the importance of character development cannot be overemphasized and can be viewed variously and just summarized below:
      1. Character by grace
In renewing your mind, you have a soul which lives in your body and a spirit. You have to develop your inclinations, dispositions etc to be like God. Every now and then, your thought life should be replica of Christ with His words as guiding tool and such will guarantee your spiritual standing, make you good ardent and then faithfully response and react to every situation as Christ would. Inability to renew one’s mind, you can neither develop nor maintain Christian character (Col 3:16; Heb 12:1-2; 1 Tim 2: 1-2; 2 Cor 3:18). Full life and godliness result from a renewed mind in Christ. This also represents the supply and provision of God, which grows as one develops and growth is a sign of life. We must ensure our character today is better than that of yesterday.
      2. Diligence
By consistent living as enabled by God who always get things done with and for us. So, self-effort is not the fundamental. Once, we have and work with God, we build these life sustaining character traits (2 Pet 1:1-5). This is divine power to divine nature. The seed is already in us for development; we need to continue to add and have it spring up- as the new creation attributes. Imparting and empowering are the essence and being conscious of the grace is diligence. God has called us to develop our character as provided by God, not by our works.
      3. Balance grace and diligence
Strive to develop a bit of grace and a bit of diligence in order to maintain and achieve a renewed character or active mind for Christ. In 1 Pet 2: 12-13 and Phil 2:12-13, we are admonished to work out our salvation with fear and trembling. We are to do our part as God has done His own. We should work out our faith and should not give up-because God is at work and we are work-in- progress. This remains the process to keep our character in check and make us win souls to the kingdom.
      4. Mind Transformation
For growth, sustainable godliness and scripturality, we need to keep our character on top-check; to avoid exhibiting inconsistence in behavior with our Father God. Jesus never demonstrated such in His life. This process or mind boosting/renewal or metamorphorsis of our mind is our guarantee that the character of God, the divine nature, resident in us will be successfully developed.
References to relevant portions of the Bible, most already highlighted will be of immense help.
      5. Leadership
If you do not renew your mind, you can never have good character and therefore not be given leadership position (1 Tim 3;10; James 1:21-22). This is because renewal of mind is central to having good character which will qualify one for vineyard assignment.
      Conclusion
Because of the significance of the mind renewal to the character development and the immense benefits to the kingdom, Christian character has a pivotal role to play. Therefore, it’s development attracts much attention.
In the discussion of reputation, charisma, agape love, among others the position of character is indispensable. It is opined that character is the bedrock of every successful believer and should be given a prime place; taking into cognizance, the relevance of the centrality of systematic mind renewal efforts and importance for the attainment of the feat. Believers with sterling character must work in wisdom, among other befitting qualities and even when unfairly attacked, will trust God’s vindication while still displaying good character. It should be noted that attacks should not change who you are for ultimately, a person’s character will be seen after the fire of persecuation.

I sincerely love the part where you spoke of balancing diligence and grace, because this is a core part of our lives as believer’s that is often taken for granted. We just want to sit down and expect grace to do it all. Sometimes believer’s think they can just do things anyhow they please because of grace. The reverse should be the case, we should take diligence personally keeping in mind that it is still by grace that we have been saved. Apostle Paul said, shall we sin that grace may abound? God forbid. As believer’s we should set the pace for others to follow and not the other way round but sadly this is not the case most times. You sometimes find believer’s display a high sense of mediocrity in all they do. They do it because everyone else is doing it and whichever they choose to do it, not necessarily the right way it ought to be done. But I believe a consistent renewal of the mind will be of help to this character of mediocrity.
I also love the part about mind transformation. This is a major part of our growth as believers. Without the actual transformation of our minds then we would not be able to experience righteousness in it’s fullness.

The renewal of the mind is central to the development of your character as a believer. Write a post on 5 ways renewing your mind can help develop your character as a Christian.
The renewal of the mind is the key to guaranteed success in every area of your life.
      1) When we renew our mind through the word, we are transformed into the express image of Christ. When we renew our minds consistently we get an example in Christ to compare our conduct and character against His:
According to 2 Corinthians 3:18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord. This scripture says that as we behold we become (paraphrase). Also in James 1:21 Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.James 1:22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. Jesus Christ was and still is the perfect example of what it means to walk in good conduct and sterling character. He showed this through His actions and responses whenever His character was questioned at various times e.g at the garden of Gethsemane “Luke 22:50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear. :51 But Jesus answered and said, “Permit even this.” And He touched his ear and healed him. He has shown us that true character comes from the inside. It is not a question of what was done to you and what your expected response should be.
      2) A consistent renewal of our mind allows God shape us into the very image of Christ through the help of the Holy Spirit:
John 14:26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. When we study the word and or listen to messages, go for word based seminars and others, we are doing our part in the renewal of our minds still the Holy Spirit shapes us into the very image of Christ. When we behold and are transformed in our hearts then we begin to see a physical manifestation of the character of Christ Himself through the help of the Holy Spirit. Character is both imparted and developed character. Therefore we are to work hand in hand with the Holy Spirit to develop this character that has been imparted through the new birth.
      3) The renewal of our mind shows us what we need to do instead of what we ought to do:
According to Matthew 5, Jesus gives us various guides of what we need to do instead of what we ought to do. Matthew 5:43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy’. According to the scripture above, you ought not to love someone who hates you, yet Jesus tells us otherwise in the next verse, Matthew 5:44 But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you. This is definitely not what we ought to do but what we need to do as Jesus has shown us. Whatever character you choose to display at any point in time, do not compare it with what others would do, rather compare it with what Jesus did or expects us to do. We should always ask ourselves “What would Jesus do”.
      4) The renewal of our mind helps us become more knowledgeable and less ignorant:
1 Peter 1:14 as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; 15 but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.”
Proverbs 16:16 How much better to get wisdom than gold! And to get understanding is to be chosen rather than silver. 17 The highway of the upright is to depart from evil; He who keeps his way preserves his soul.
The more we renew our minds, the more knowledge we have of who we are in Christ Jesus. This forms a basis for our character as believer’s. We are no longer bound by the law of sin and death, we know that being raptured to see our maker on the last day is what is the goal, therefore our focus is living a life that is pleasing to God.
Proverbs 16:7 When a man’s ways please the Lord, He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him. We have been liberated through grace into righteousness and right standing with the Father. We know how to act because we know the Word.
      5) Renewal of the mind purges and cleanses us and ignites fire on the inside of us:
Isaiah 1:18 “Come now, and let us reason together,” Says the Lord, “Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool.
God’s word has the power to cleanse us no matter how messed up we think out characters may be. When we open our hearts to the pure word, it is able to help us learn and unlearn. It doesn’t matter how corrupt your mind may be, consistent renewal of the mind will purge it of everything that is not of God. When the fire inside of us is stirred up it burns to ash everything that needs not be there and makes us hungry for the Word of God even more.

I agree that renewal of the mind is the keys to guaranteed success in every aspect of our life because when we were in the world we think and live our lives without heading in the direction God ordained us to,

As soon as were reconciled back to him we need to renew our minds constantly to know the plans and purpose for which we were made and fulfill it, it is only then we can say like Paul in 2 Timothy 4 vs 7 that I have fought the good fight and finish the race.

Your points are very good, I especially like points 3 and 4 because naturally a lot of humans shy away from the burden of making decisions (especially since they rather blame someone else when such decisions backfires) , but with the constant renewal of mind you know clearly what you are created to do and such knowing helps to shape your decisions, thoughts process and charts your life in the right direction, just like Jesus who had a clear purpose of his mission on earth and all through the scriptures every decisions he took was governed by that knowledge, we will be armed with the right knowledge and always know what we ought to do because we are not ignorant.

I also agree that to have the character of God we need to be in constant fellowship with the Holy Spirit, because 1 Corinthians 2 vs 9 shows that only the Spirit of God knows the things of God, so he will align your actions and your thoughts daily to be like God’s own.

REPLY TO CHRISTIAN CHARACTER> GROUP DISCUSSION 2:
Being born again is one thing renewal of the mind is another. Indeed, renewal of the mind is the key and guarantees a successful Christian life. From what I gleaned from your write up, renewal of the mind is like physical mirror, it shows you your exact looks. So, it’s manifested in our day-to-day life. The Christ is not only seen in us but affects everyone that comes close or identifies with us.
Renewal of the mind is actually central:
        • It projects us as light to the world
        • It helps to lay aside those things that will not glorify God Matthew 5:16
        • Consistent renewal of the mind opens us to correction, self-discipline.
        • It helps you respond to situations like the example you gave in Luke 22:50.
        • Renewal of the mind guides speech as you respond to people in wisdom Ephesians 4:29.
I agree with you totally, that renewal of the mind enables you to be kingdom minded. A situation where you don’t speak yet people are getting saved as a result of your developed character.
Let me share a life story to buttress this point. I went to the town market to purchase fish, I could not get the particular fish I wanted, for me not to go home empty-handed, I decided to buy something else. As I was prizing one of items, two young men stood by me and were arguing among themselves, saying, “she is a Christian, can’t you see, she is a Christian?” I turned to see what was going on, I discovered they had taken position around my bag. one was in front of me and the other was by my bag. I asked the seller to bend down. So, I asked who they were, the young girl said they were rubbers. I greeted them, then they repeated, madam you be Christian., give us anything we will go.” I handed the N200 change the seller gave to me, and they walked away.
What am I saying here? Your renewed mind, your developed character can radiate and express the glory of the Lord in you. Isaiah 60:1, Romans 8:18

Topic : The renewal of the mind is central to the development of your character as a believer. Write a post on 5 ways renewing your mind can help develop your character as a Christian.
Renewing your mind according to Romans 12:2 indicates that renewing the mind will renew or transform your life. To renew or change the mind requires changing what goes into it. Our behavior is driven by our most strongly-held beliefs.
Renewing your mind aligns your mind with the truth of God’s word by learning to recognize the lies of the enemy, replace them with the truth of God’s word .

Ways renewing our mind helps us develop our character as a chirstian:
When you renew your mind with God’s words, you are conforming to God’s image. You begin to think like God and to act like God.
Your worldview changes and becomes more in line with God’s worldview. Bad characters begin to disappear. Your mind starts dwelling more on thoughts of God and what He thinks and does.
There is a clear reason for all this happening. God tells us in (1 Thessalonian 5:22), we are a spirit, we have a soul (which is our mind, will, and emotions), and we live in a body.
As we also renew our mind, the fruits of the Spirit ( Gal 5 vs 22-23) will be maginifed in us, we become like God daily and in return, it will be visible for others to see.

      1.  As you keep renewing you mind you start loving others differently like God loves because one of God’s character is love, The Bible says, “God is love,” in 1 John 4:8b, NIV,  he gave his son to undeserving human, we too can love like him not because people deserves it but because the word of God (which is one of the tools we use for mind renewal) says we should love unconditionally.

      2. Your thoughts, pattern and your way of life will change:
Paul encourages believers in Phillipians 2 vs 15, to put off their worldly ways of living because the world is at enmity with God. (James 4.4) as you keep renewing your mind you start shedding off thoughts that doesn’t align with the way God thinks and start acting like him.
Phillipians 4 vs 8 listed what our thoughts pattern should follow, and because out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks, we start acting on those pure and noble things that filled our hearts Matt 12 vs 34-40.

      3. You will develop self control and self discipline:
Self control is discipline in the face of pressure from an immediate urge, it means delay immediate gratification of the senses, self discipline is about maintaining focus and focus in pursuing long-term goals.
God shows us self control in Romans 8 vs 32 by sacrificing his son, so that he will have many sons. Jesus exhibited both, because insipte of the devil plans to deter his plan ,he maintained the reason he came to earth (Matt 26 vs 53-54), he demonstrated self control by submitting to God’s plan.
As we renew our mind we come to the acknowledgement that God has deposited in us self Control (2 Timothy 1 vs 7) and the Holy Spirit who has been given to us will help us stay focus and not let the world’s standards be ours.
Self control is submission to God and ability to keep our emotions in check. In Matthew 21vs 12-13, Jesus was angry and destroyed the table of those selling in the temple, he did it in total submission to God, so while we are developing self control our primary focus remains on what God wants us to do.

      4. As we continue to renew our mind we put off pride and start growing in humility:
Jesus does whatever he saw his father do and the Bible recorded that Jesus lived on this earth in humility, Phil 2 vs 5- 8, (John 5 vs 30), as we change daily in our mindset we stop boasting on things we have or who we are, and start being more like Chirst who shed all he had and gave it all for our sake.
Another example is Paul, he was recognized in the society  (Acts 13)  but in 2 Corinthians 12, he said he humbled himself and only boast in God.
As we renew our mind we start measuring our life based on God’s standards and not by man’s standards.

      5. You will have long suffering as God does:
Long suffering is the ability to forbear a situation which is in most cases related to someone, it deals with negative actions and attitude towards others.
One character of God is long suffering  (2 Peter 3vs 9, Roman 2 vs 4.) We start to develop such patience and long suffering towards other because we are emulating God and we are to live like him, we will be slow to anger towards other and our anger towards God (for most people when they didn’t receive what the ask from God) will be eliminated, James 1 vs 9.

5 WAYS RENEWING OF YOUR MIND CAN HELP TO DEVELOP YOUR CHARACTER AS A CHRISTIAN.

The word renewing begins in the mind until our mindset is aligned rightly. Every action taken by the person is usually out of order. The mind is the place of intellect, reasoning, or thought feeling, will, and intentions. The mind is important because it is the primary determinate of who a person is in every aspect of their life. Then, speaking of character, it is the mental and moral qualities distinctive of an individual.

The first step is to make the choice to focus on Christ. The Christian character is the character of God, which is the foundation. To understand this, we look at the character of Christ Jesus. Hebrews 1:3
who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, Jesus is the express image of God He is the precise representation of God in every respect. As Christian, we look unto Jesus the Revelation of God to us. Jesus was always in seek of the father. There was never any inconsistency between the character of God and the character of Jesus, that is why as Christian we should desire never to be seen with any inconsistency in our character in every area of our life because Jesus is our example; The author and finisher of our faith.

Second, focusing on God‘s love and the Grace of God. For God so loved the world that he gave His only begotten son. Gods grace is God riches at Christ expense .Grace also means Gods enablement and empowerment.

      2 Peter 1:3
[3]as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue,
Divine power has given us all things in abundance. for this very reason, by which had been giving exceedingly great and precious promises we will ADD diligently develop our character to exhibits the character of God and doing away with faulty or unhealthy thought pattern and replacing them with true,Godly one.

Thirly, focusing on being in christ and rejecting the lie and deception of sinful desire of the enemy of our soul. Samson is a perfect example of a sorry story of gift or charisma without character. Samson forgot the purpose of the gift. This is the same as believers we have been called to be separated from the world to God. It is in this separation to God that we develop our spiritual character

Fourthly, rest in the truth that you are accepted in Jesus Christ. Samson did not build intimacy with the Lord. Intimacy with God is a good ground from which character springs forth. The character of God keeps the power of God in our lives and in perfect balance. But Samson forgot that the law of sowing and reaping works. character development begins in the mind, and in the mind is where spiritual transformation happens.Romas12:2.

Finally, focusing on Christ and living with the heart of God. Ephesians 2:4 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, God is more eager for us to fulfil destiny. Focus on God rather than ourselves. God’s promise is to lead us and show us His will for our lives and submit to His leadership in our lives. When we understand God’s love and mercy for us, we find the reason to develop our character and renew our mind.

Five ways renewing your mind can help develop Christian character
Yes, I agree with the statement that the renewal of the mind is central to the development of your character as a believer. And when the topic of mind renewal comes up, the first scripture that comes to mind is Romans 12:1-2 “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, [which is] your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what [is] that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”
There is also Ephesians 4:21-24 “Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.”
Here are five ways the renewal of your mind can help develop Christian character.
      1. Renewing your mind gives you a revelation of your true identity – your true character: Through the New Testament we see that the old sinful man is dead and the new man who should desire and think as Christ, is now alive. We are also taught that closeness to God through his word, keeps us in tune with our new nature. Psalms 119:11 (NIV) I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. In James1:23-25 “For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues [in it,] and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does”.
the word of God is likened to a mirror and it is by looking in this mirror and acting according to what we see in the mirror that we begin to realise that we are Christ like and we have the character of Christ. It is not something we are going to possess one day but something that we already have in him. In the word of God, we begin to see this truth, our mind is renewed and we begin to develop in any areas that are lacking.

      2. Renewing your mind gives you a revelation of your holiness. According to the verse we read in Romans 12:1& 2 we see that we can present our bodies to God and be holy just as our Father is holy(1Pet.1:15). As we transform through the renewal of our mind, it becomes easier to settle in the truth that we are set apart and not lonely souls. We realise that we do not have to conform to the patterns of this world because we are different and we should give expression to our true selves through our character without feeling out of place.

      3. Renewing your mind give you control over your thoughts and emotions. It has been scientifically proven that our emotions are connected to our thoughts. Therefore, if a person is thinking happy thoughts, then they will begin to feel happy. Well, science tries to tell us what scriptures have already revealed. As a man thinketh, so is he (Prov.23:7). By renewing your mind and thinking on the things that are pure, true, of a good report etc (Phil.4:8) we begin to manifest these things. If we think kind thoughts, we begin to carry out kind actions.

      4. Renewing your mind gives you peace and rest. Many times, there is the temptation to want to “hustle” and strive to succeed at work, in ministry or wherever else a person has been planted. It is in yielding to this temptation that selfish motives are stirred up and people begin to try to scheme their way through things just to “outshine “others. Renewing your mind brings a revelation of God’s provision, love and sovereignty. Psalm 18:43 – 44 “Thou hast delivered me from the strivings of the people; And thou hast made me the head of the heathen: A people whom I have not known shall serve me. As soon as they hear of me, they shall obey me: The strangers shall submit themselves unto me.” And many other scriptures show us that our steps are ordered by the Lord. We are assured that we are getting maximum results even with seemingly minimal effort because the Lord is our portion.

      5. Renewing your mind gives you dominion over sin. In Ephesians 4:21-24 we encouraged to put on the new nature as we allow the Spirit renew our thoughts and attitudes. This renewal gives us dominion over lusts of the flesh, pride and other characteristics of the sinful nature. Clothed with Christ we are able to be better witnesses for him.

      To Obiamonu

      COURSE CODE: CC – 105 – LC
COURSE TITLE: CHRISTIAN CHARACTER AGAPE LOVE

QUESTION: The renewal of the mind is central to the development of your character as a believer. Write a post on 5 ways renewing your mind can help develop your character as a Christian.

Your post should be a minimum 400 words while

      ANSWER:
Renewing your mind is a transformative process that plays a pivotal role in the development of Christian character. Below are five ways in which this renewal can significantly contribute to my growth as a believer:

      1. ALIGNMENT WITH BIBLICAL TRUTHS
Engaging in the renewal of my mind involves immersing oneself in the teachings of the Bible. By aligning my thoughts and beliefs with biblical truths, creates a solid foundation for my character development. This alignment provides a moral compass, guiding my decisions and actions in accordance with Christian principles.

      2. CULTIVATING A POSITIVE PERSPECTIVE:
Renewing your mind encourages a shift in perspective towards positivity. Instead of dwelling on negative thoughts or worldly concerns, focusing on the goodness of God and His promises helps cultivate a more optimistic outlook. This positive mindset not only influences your character but also impacts your interactions with others, fostering a spirit of kindness and encouragement.

      3. DEVELOPING PATIENCE AND RESILIENCE:
The process of renewing your mind often involves patience and perseverance. As you grapple with life’s challenges, relying on biblical teachings can instill a sense of resilience. Understanding that trials are opportunities for growth and learning helps you develop patience, endurance, and a steadfast character that withstands the tests of time.

      4. ENHANCING EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE:
Renewing your mind involves self-reflection and an awareness of your thoughts and emotions. This self-awareness contributes to the development of emotional intelligence, a crucial aspect of Christian character. By understanding and managing your emotions in line with biblical principles, you become better equipped to navigate relationships, respond to adversity, and demonstrate empathy towards others.

      5. EMPOWERING A SPIRIT OF LOVE AND FORGIVENESS:
Central to Christian character is the embodiment of love and forgiveness. Renewing your mind emphasizes these virtues, encouraging you to reflect the love and forgiveness exemplified by Jesus Christ. As your mind is transformed, you become more capable of extending grace to others, fostering a compassionate and forgiving heart that mirrors the unconditional love of God.

In conclusion, the renewal of the mind is a dynamic process that goes beyond mere intellectual understanding. It involves a holistic transformation that impacts your beliefs, emotions, and actions, shaping a character that aligns with the principles of Christianity. By actively engaging in this renewal, you lay the groundwork for a more Christ-like character, allowing the virtues of love, patience, and resilience to permeate every aspect of your life.

I like the thoughts expressed and conclusions reached in your post. The fact that they emphasize the transformative power of God in a Believer’s life, makes this post very relatable.

I also like the fact that your discussion highlights the truth that this depth of morality and ethical conduct you have described can all be sourced from consistent fellowship with the Word (Rom.12 :2).

In addition, I would like to highlight the fact that this good conduct you have described is very different from that expressed by unbelievers (Eph. 2: 8-9), in the sense that it is empowered by the love of God, therefore, it doesn’t seek recognition amongst men, but the welfare of the one loved. This is because, these works have been predestined for us in Christ (Eph. 2:10). So, as much as a person’s moral strength is important, because that propels the expressions of character, what is most significant in this discussion, is the motivation, which is the love of God.

Before I go on to answer this question, there is a need to define Renewal of mind as the process where we take the word of God, put it in our mind, and then allow it to grow in our Spirit.

A believer is a spirit, he’s not part spirit, and He’s a spirit being. He has a soul – mind, will and emotions – and he lives in a body. For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Hebrew 4:12
Believers must learn how to let the man- the spirit man on the inside – dominate their soul and body. That will solve many problems in the body as far as the devil is concerned. As believers let their recreated spirits dominate, they will learn how not to give the devil any access.

You need to understand that it’s not the outward man that becomes a new creature it is the inward man – Man’s spirit that becomes a new creature in Christ because all things have not become new in your body and soul. That means you still have your outward man to deal with because as long as you are in your body, you will have the desires of the fleshly carnal nature and the unredeemed soul to control, and that is the realm where Satan tries to gain access to man.

      Developing your character by renewing of mind is as follows;
      1) Through spending time with the Lord in studying the word of God ‘’ Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed thereto according to thy word.’’ Psalm 119:9. ‘’ Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. ‘’John15:3
      2) Through meditating on the word of God and the eternal things which is the primary source. “This book of the law shall not depart out from your mouth, but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success”. Joshua 1:8
      3) In developing character through renewing of your mind by praying daily because in praying God leads and directs us in our paths, ’ For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ’’. 2corinthians 4:16
      4) By intentionally choosing a godly character trait. ‘Now we are buried with Him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.’’ Romans6:4. ‘’21 If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: 22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; 23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; 24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness Ephesians 4:21-24
      5) Another is by worship and praise – A believer can constantly renew his mind by praising God always so as not to allow the rubbish of the enemy to get to him easily.

Good evening mam I don’t really agree to this school of thought that a believer is entirely a spirit. But am sure we are supernatural beings (spirit beings) living in a body and posses a soul.

Firstly a believer is not inherently a spirit, but the term is often used metaphorically to convey a sense of dedication, conviction, and faith. In a spiritual context, a believer is someone who adheres to a particular set of doctrines, principles, or faith traditions. The essence of belief lies in the realm of consciousness, shaped by personal convictions and values.

While a believer may not be a spirit in the supernatural sense, the term often alludes to a connection between the individual and something beyond the material world. This could be a higher power, a divine force, or a set of guiding principles that transcend the physical realm. In this metaphorical sense, the believer’s commitment and adherence to their beliefs can be seen as a spiritual aspect of their identity.

Belief systems often provide a framework for understanding the intangible aspects of existence, such as morality, purpose, and the nature of reality. Thus, while a believer is not a spirit in the literal sense, the term encapsulates the spiritual dimension of one’s convictions and the profound impact these beliefs can have on one’s thoughts, actions, and worldview.

I t is important to that we cannot develop Christian character without the commitment to renewing our mind…

Renewing our minds with the truth unveils the perspectives of God and His possibilities for our lives and dispels deception, lies and schemes.

This empowers us to maintain our faith and anchors our thinking in God’s word. This is the power of a renewed mind.

Renewing Your Mind Gets You Out of Your Head. “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.

      Renewing Your Mind Changes You.
Renewing Your Mind Gives You Purpose and Direction.

Renewing our minds is important because it helps us to better understand and apply the Word of God (Psalm 119:11). When our minds are filled with the truth of the Bible, we are better equipped to make wise decisions and live in a way that pleases God.

Renewing our minds is important because it enables us to stand firm against the enemy’s lies (Ephesians 6:11-12).

The character of God is the basis, foundation or reference point for Christian character. The development of Christian character therefore, is aimed at getting a precise representation of the character of God, which was fully expressed in Christ, the express image of God (Heb. 1:3).

The renewal of the mind refers to taking in the Word of God that eventually causes a change in your soul and therefore a change in your character and conduct. This is essential in Christianity because God is the reference and benchmark for Christian Character. Therefore, it is only His principles as set forth in His Word, and the examples modelled by Christ that will guide us into attaining this glorious standard.

5 ways renewing our minds can help develop our Character as believers are:

      1) It makes us knowledgeable of the truth of God’s Word concerning our identity and purpose (2 Pet. 1:3-7).

This is critical because being secure in one’s identity makes it easier to identify with the purpose one has been called to fulfill, thereby establishing a strong sense of conviction.

      2) It provides true principles and serves as a guide to fulfilling one’s purpose.

Our fellowship with the Word will make it easier for us to identify God’s blueprint for the assignment we have been called to fulfill, as it will guide us with practical knowledge and wisdom.

      3) It empowers us to walk in love (Gal. 2: 19-20).

Love is the force that motivates us to reach out to the lost world and perform the good works we have been predestined for (1 Cor. 13: 4-8). It propels us to seek out and pursue the welfare of the one loved, as Christ intends us to. A constant study of the Word will expose us to practical examples and ways that such love can be expressed.

      4) Our consistent fellowship with the Word will provide the necessary strength needed to withstand the suggestions and temptations to sin. It becomes an umpire in our lives, and in the event that we fall short of the standard, it realigns and redirects us back to God (1 Cor. 10:13; Ps. 119:9-11).

      5) It empowers us to be ambassadors of Christ (Gal. 2:20).

The renewal of the mind makes the perfect picture and example of Christ enlarged in our hearts, as it draws us deeper and deeper into fellowship with Christ. This eventually results in the total transformation of our conduct ( Rom. 12:2; 1 Jn. 3:2).
