The roles played by angels in the life of the early Church as seen in the book of the Acts of the Apostles are as follows:

1. Encouragement. During the ascension of Jesus into heaven, his disciples were left bewildered seeing him go from them a second time (Acts 1:10-11). As they stood there gazing steadfastly into heaven, two angels appeared to them and encouraged them with words of assurance. That Jesus was going to return from heaven again. In Acts 5:19-20, we see a divine intervention through an angel who opened the prison doors of where the apostles were imprisoned; and the angel encouraged the apostles to keep preaching after releasing them from prison.

2. Rescue and delivery from danger. We see in Acts 12:1-19, that Herod who had killed James and saw that it pleased the people, went on to take Peter and put him in prison. He sought to do the same as he did to James, to Peter. But there was divine rescue and delivery through an angel and Peter was not killed neither did he remain in prison. In this case also, it is clear that this angelic intervention was an answer to the prayers of the church who had engaged in prayers upon hearing that Peter had been imprisoned by Herod. So God answered the prayers of his church by sending an angel.

3. Divine guidance. In Acts 10:1-8, God brought divine guidance through an angel to Cornelius who wasn’t a believer as at the time. God had seen the devotion and generosity of Cornelius and through an angel gave him directions on how to reach for the apostle Peter who would preach the gospel to him for his salvation. Through this angelic visitation resulting to guidance, Cornelius and his household got saved after they had heard the gospel from the lips of Peter.

Also, in Acts 8:26 we see another provision of divine guidance and this time around, it was to Philip. The angel guided Philip to a man that needed to be saved. When Philip followed that guidance, he actually met with a man who he preached and explained the word to and the man was saved.

In summary, angels carried out supportive and intervening roles in the lives of believers, the apostles and even an unbeliever for the benefit of the early Church. They aided the work of the Church and the apostles and brought about the will of God in which men executed to the glory of God.

The role or ministry of angels in the early church can be seen as recorded in the books on a number of occasions. These works of angels can be said to have been very vital to the establishment and advancement of the early Church.
The following are instances of the roles of angels in the early as recorded in the book of Acts.
1. Deliverance from prison. Acts 5:16-19. The Apostles here had been thrown in prison for preaching and healing in the name of Jesus, defying an earlier instruction from the high priest and his cohort, not to preach the Gospel in the name of Jesus Christ. These men had been imprisoned for choosing to follow Christ’s command rather than men’s and at whatever cost. The cost on this occasion was imprisonment. But while they were there, an angel of the Lord, came by night, and opened their prison door, just like the angel, rolling away the stone at the tomb of Jesus. The Apostles were once more free.
Another angelic ministry of deliverance from prison is recorded in Acts 12. The story involved the arrest of the Apostle Peter after the arrest and murder of James the brother of John. It would seem, that Herod’s intention was to kill Peter. We are told in verse 5 of the prayer of the church for Peter. God answered the prayer of the church on behalf of Peter by sending an angel to execute his deliverance. Acts 12:7-11.
2. Divine guidance. In the same story of Acts 5, not only did the angel free the Apostles from prison, they also received divine guidance and instruction from God through the angel. Acts 5:19-21.
Another instance of divine guidance through angels is recorded in Acts 8:26-38. On this occasion, it was deacon Phillip, who had received this guidance from the angel of the Lord, and his obedience to this leading, led to the salvation of an Ethiopian eunuch, which most likely led to spread of the Gospel to Ethiopia.
Also, another interesting even is found in Acts 10. In this story, an angel appears and gives instruction to Cornelius, a Roman centurion, which ultimately led to the visit of the Apostle Peter, who had seen a vision and had been instructed by the HolySpirit. The Gospel was preached to Cornelius and his household and they were baptised in the HolySpirit. The appearance of the angel to Cornelius, and the subsequent obedience that followed would lead to the confirmation of the vision that Peter had seen. Acts 10:1-22.
In summary, angels were used by God in the early church to minister both deliverance and guidance to His people, for the purpose of the advancement of the Church and His honour and glory.

Firstly, the church is generally believed to have began on the day of Pentecost in the upper room, where the disciples of Jesus received the promise of the Spirit after the resurrection of Jesus Christ. If this is true, can this angelic ministry of encouragement in Acts 1 can be classified as being to the early church?
Secondly, I believe that it is a great blessing to know as you have pointed out, that, no matter the danger we may face in our pursuit of God, He will always provide us with deliverance. It is a blessing indeed that we have angels as ministering spirits for us who are heirs of salvation.
Furthermore, it is another blessing indeed to know, that God answers us as a local Church when we pray together. Some of the response to Peter upon seeing him out prison suggests, that there were some who may have doubted. However, in spite of this, God answers their prayer and delivers Peter.
Finally, the Lord is our Shepherd indeed, and He knows how to communicate with us His children. He knows exactly how to reach us, guide us and instruct us. In the stories you reference, God uses angels to provide guidance and instructions to His people. He thought it to be the best way to reach these people in that particular time and He did so. God’s course of action are always the best possible.

• Angels provide Protection and Deliverance to the Apostles.
In Acts of the Apostles 5:19 -20 “But at night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out, and said, 20 “Go, stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this life.” NKJV. That night, an angel intervened to protect the apostles and set them free.

• Acts 10: 1 – 3 There was a man named Cornelius who lived in Caesarea. A devout man who feared God with all his household. An Angel came to him as an answer to his prayers. The Angel instructed him to send for Simon Peter who would tell him the message of Jesus Christ.

• Acts 12:11 “11 And when Peter had come to himself, he said, “Now I know for certain that the Lord has sent His angel, and has delivered me from the hand of Herod and from all the expectation of the Jewish people.” An Angle helped to get Apostle Peter out of jail.

• Acts 27:23 – 26. An Angel encouraged Apostle Paul when he faced a storm on his way to Rome. “23 For there stood by me this night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve, 24 saying, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul; you must be brought before Caesar; and indeed God has granted you all those who sail with you.’ 25 Therefore take heart, men, for I believe God that it will be just as it was told me. 26 However, we must run aground on a certain island.”

• Acts 12:23 NKJV. “Then immediately an angel of the Lord struck him because he did not give glory to God. And he was eaten by worms and died”. The evil and wicked king Herod was killed by an Angel, because he did not give glory to God, and so the angel struck him dead.

• Acts 8:26- 28 NKJV. An Angel appeared to Philip and directed him toward the Ethiopian eunuch Now an angel of the Lord spoke to Philip, saying, “Arise and go toward the south along the road which goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza. This is desert. 27 So he arose and went. And behold, a man of Ethiopia, a eunuch of great authority under Candace the queen of the Ethiopians, who had charge of all her treasury, and had come to Jerusalem to worship”

Angels were also busy ministering to people after the time of Christ. As we look at the history of the early church, we also find angels ministering to God’s people;

1. They Provided Direction: Acts 8:26
An angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Get ready and go south to the road that leads down to Gaza from Jerusalem—the desert road.
God used an Angel to direct Philip to the Ethiopian that needed to benefit from the
Ministry of Philip.

2. They came as an answer to Prayer; Acts 10:1-3
When a Gentile believer named Cornelius wanted to know more about the Lord, an angel was sent to him.
We find an angel coming to Cornelius as an answer to his prayer. The angel instructed Cornelius to send for Simon Peter who would tell him the message of Jesus the Christ.

3. They Brought Deliverance: Acts 12:7-11
The Bible says that an angel helped get the Apostle Peter out of jail. Peter thought it was a dream or a vision, for it seemed unreal. He couldn’t believe it was happening

Then Peter came to himself and said, “Now I know without a doubt that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from Herod’s clutches and from everything the Jewish people were hoping would happen Acts 12:11

4. They brought Judgement: Acts 12:23
The evil king Herod was killed by an angel. The bible records that because he had not given the glory to God, the angel of the Lord struck him down, and he was eaten by worms and died.

5. They brought Words of encouragement: Acts 27:23-24
An angel encouraged Paul when he faced a storm on his way to Rome.
Because of this Paul had assurance of God’s protection.

To further add to your first point, Philips acceptance to the angel’s message should remind us that when we receive in our prayer an inspiration to do an act of charity or to speak a word of comfort , we should always respond with trust . in this way , we become instruments of God’s love. it in most cases comes with an impact that goes well beyond anything we could imagine . Even a single inspired word might be the first step in bringing about a conversion.
The liturgy in which the Angels participate and from which they serve as models and from which flows the Grace of God, is one of our greatest resources for evangelization . Over and over again , we realize in the course of our lives that when we’re more concerned about our Father’s business than the trifling things that too often fill the hours of our day, God makes us instruments of His love to touch the hearts of others and draw them closer and closer to Him.

The divine grace which God shows towards humanity will be observed by angels. Moreover, the ministry of angels did not stop with the ascension of Jesus. Angels were also busy ministering to people after the time of Christ. During his early days, when the church was growing, angels were seen to be ministering to God’s people, and the church is a testimony to angels of the wisdom of God. Angels witnessed the beginning of the Church. The presence of Angels continued to strengthen the apostles as they went about their first work and undertook their first missionary journeys.

There are many scenes in the book of Acts of the Apostles that describe the angels’ presence in the life of the young church. The book of Acts was written by St. Luke whose Gospel describes with great beauty and precision the appearances of the Angels of God from the first pages to the last.
1)TO DIRECT THE FOCUS OFTHE APOSTLES
When the Lord ascended into heaven ,two men dressed in white believed to be angels were in the midst of the apostles to remind them of their duty ; ‘Men of galilee. Why do you stand looking into Heaven? This Jesus ,who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw Him go into Heaven’(Acts 1:11). After hearing these words, the apostles went back to Jerusalem and there in the upper room together with others of like mind, They awaited the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost . After the arrival of the Holy Spirit the apostles
with bravery and conviction , began to preach Christ in all His Glory and truth. In this way and with help of the Holy Spirit, they converted many to Christ.
The angels must have looked on with great joy as they witnessed the beginnings of the Church.
In this book of Acts , we see the angels coming and going with ordinariness that shows us how the natural and supernatural are woven together in the life of the Church.

2) TO SECURE PETER’S RELEASE
St. Peter , the first pope , had a particularly powerful experience with the ministry of angels .
(Acts 12:1-7) : In this passage, we see the early church strengthening Peter with their prayers on his behalf and GOD heard the prayers of the church.
The very night when Herod was about to bring him out, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers , bound with two chains, and sentries before the door were guarding the prison ; and behold an angel of the Lord appeared , and light shone in the cell; and he struck Peter on the side and woke him, saying ‘Get up quickly’. And the chains fell off his hands.
Peter thought that he was still asleep and that the angel was revealing to him a pathway through death. But instead , he was about to be restored to the church. Just as once the Lord had sent His angel to protect Daniel from the lions den and just as once the Lord had sent His angel to protect the three young men in the fiery furnace , so now the Lord sent His angel once more to the first Pope , a servant of Christ , to protect him and to ensure that the nascent Church might continue to grow and to be strengthened .

3) IN THE CONVERSION OF THE FIRST GENTILE TO CHRISTIANITY
As the book of acts continues, we see another wonderful episode in which the angels intervened in the life of the Church. While Peter was staying in Joppa, he heard the Lord Jesus’ voice commanding him to eat non –kosher food. This was a preparation for the next chapter in Peter’s mission . Shortly thereafter Peter was informed that a group of gentiles was outside , calling him to go to the house of a certain Cornelius , a Roman centurion in Caesarea.
He said to them , ‘you yourselves know how unlawful it is for a Jew to associate with or to visit anyone of another nation ; but God has shown me that I should not call any man common or unclean. So when I was sent for , I came without objection. I ask then why you sent for me. And Cornelius said ; four days ago, about this hour , I was keeping the ninth hour of prayer in my house ; and behold a man stood before me in bright apparel saying, Cornelius ,your prayer has been heard and your alms have been remembered before God .’ (Acts 10 :28-31). And Peter , impressed by this angelic message that confirmed the revelation made to him in joppa, replied in (Acts 10:34-38).
God uses His angels as messengers in this crucial moment when the first gentile convert to christianity, together with his family , was received and baptized by Peter . A centurion was a proud and feared soldier , a leader whose men obeyed him unquestioningly, and was formed by the violence and discipline of an often brutal military culture.
The conversion of such a man required nothing less than an overwhelming transformation. Grace had already invaded his soul . since he told Peter that he was keeping a time of prayer when the Angel appeared to him.

4) IN THE BAPTISM OF A EUNUCH
In the story of St. Philip the deacon, we see another instance in which an angel arranged all things for God’s plan and purpose . Philip was one of the seven original deacons , together with St. Stephen , and he preached in Samaria among the people the Jews considered to be heretics . His preaching was marked by many miracles , especially by the casting out of demons . But as he completed his work there , an angel appeared and said to him ; Rise and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza. (Acts 8:26).
Philip followed the angels message immediately . Along the road , he came across an important servant of the queen of Ethiopia. This man was a eunuch who had come to know the Jewish faith , He was seated in his carriage reading aloud ( As was the custom of the time ) from the scroll of Isaiah , but he was confused about the meaning of the passage . Philip immediately realized that the reason he had been brought to that place at that moment by the angel was to speak to this man; to answer his need and to preach to him the Gospel of Christ . The man immediately responded to this grace and asked for baptism, which Philip conferred.
This passage is especially important because , in enlightening and baptizing the eunuch , Philip did something extraordinary for the building up of the Church.
Eunuchs were outside the community of Israel (Deut. 23:1), and so this baptism initiated the extension of the preaching of the Gospel to all peoples of the world.
